History and Origin

Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Sarang (IGIT Sarang) was established in 1982. Its origin was traced to the merger of the Odisha College of Engineering (OCE) and the earlier Modern Polytechnic (MPT) that had been operating since 1981. The institution was initially managed directly by the Government of Odisha, and later governance was transferred to an autonomous society. In 2017, autonomous status was granted by the University Grants Commission and recognition was accorded for independent academic decision-making.

Government Permission and Growth:

Over the years, the institute was allowed to expand its academic offerings and infrastructure. Government permission and approvals were secured for diverse undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and research programs. The institute was affiliated with Biju Patnaik University of Technology for its curricula, and necessary approvals from AICTE and UGC were obtained to maintain legitimacy and standards.

As growth proceeded, academic branches across engineering, science, and allied disciplines were introduced. Presently, a substantial student body is enrolled. In 2022, the number of students was recorded at 4,373, of whom approximately 4,000 were undergraduates and 373 were postgraduates.
